Moodle on the go: Accessing form your Mobile Device
It’s likely that as students at the University of Nottingham, you will access Moodle on a regular basis to visit your module sites, download and view important learning materials and submit your assessed work. There are many tasks which can be completed on Moodle and it is the main resource for your learning here at UoN. There are also various ways to access Moodle, and below we outlined the best practice guidance for how you should access Moodle on the go if you are using a mobile device.
Accessing Moodle from your mobile browser
The best way to access Moodle on a mobile device, is to use your web browser to navigate directly to moodle.nottingham.ac.uk. The Moodle site has been designed to be fully mobile responsive, so it will resize and work well on a wide range of devices. You can access Moodle on your phone or tablet device using this method.
The great thing about this approach is that you will not loose any functionality. The mobile version of Moodle is exactly the same as the version of Moodle you will see on your desktop, it has just been resized to fit a smaller screen.
If you need to check something on one of your module sites while you’re on your way to campus, or make sure you’re familiar with the topic or planned activities for the coming week, accessing Moodle from the web on mobile is a great way to do this.
Submitting Assessed Work
We would always advise that you use a desktop device or laptop to submit your assessed work. While it is possible to submit assessments from a mobile device, the experience can be limited by the smaller screen size of the device you are using. Other important aspects of the submission process, including agreeing to the required terms, viewing your digital receipt or navigating your grades from the gradebook are best completed on a larger screen. You should also consider your internet connection. Working from home or campus on a laptop or desktop device, you are more likely to have a strong ethernet or Wi-Fi connection. You do not want your submission to time out part way through. The same approach would apply to a Moodle quiz or formative exam, which again should be completed on a laptop or desktop device.
Accessing Moodle using mobile apps
The most straightforward way to access Moodle is through your mobile browser, which offers the complete Moodle experience with reliable functionality. This method ensures you’ll have access to all features and content, properly formatted for your device. For offline access, the official Moodle app offers downloading content to read later. This can be especially handy when travelling or in areas with limited connectivity.
Whilst the MyNottingham app provides Moodle access, you’ll find the browser version gives you more screen space and better functionality.
Conclusions
Overall, using Moodle on a mobile device can be beneficial. If you wish to do some reading, access your upcoming learning, or watch a video while travelling into campus on the bus, it can be very useful. But for important tasks such as submitting your assessed work, completing a take home exam, or attending an online lecture, you should always consider using a desktop or laptop device with a strong internet connection ideally from home or on campus.
