Learning Technology staff in the spotlight at Welcome Week

Many thanks to today’s author, Sally Hanford, Learning Technology Consultant for Arts.

University Welcome Week is an exciting time for new students. It’s their first chance to get familiar with the campus, make new friends, and connect with staff.

In Learning Technology, we support students as well as staff in their use of technologies for learning, and we are a crucial part of the university community. It’s great to be able to meet as many students as possible at these events. So, we’ve been out and about, ready to help students navigate the digital tools and platforms essential to their academic success.

Having a solid grasp of our university learning technologies from day one makes a big difference to students. We hope that by helping them to get familiar with learning platforms as soon as possible, we help them be more organised, stay on top of assignments, and feel more confident in accessing learning materials, giving them the best possible start in their studies with us.

Often, we are seen as the “invisible heroes” of the university, but our presence during Welcome Week helps set students up for a smooth academic experience. By meeting students during this critical time, we make sure that new students don’t feel left behind or overwhelmed by digital learning environments and empower students with the skills they need to thrive.

So, if you’re a student arriving at university, don’t hesitate to say hi to the learning technology staff you see around campus. We are here to help, and our support might make a difference to your academic success!

Comments from the Team

I was based over at Sutton Bonington, and I have to say the atmosphere was full of energy, with so many stalls to visit. I had the pleasure of speaking to some lovely students, all eager to get started with their studies, who were all very keen to learn more about Moodle. (Laura Nicholson)

For those who couldn’t attend, all is not lost! We offer weekly student drop-in sessions at each campus. Please see the times below and feel free to join us if you have any questions.

  • Mondays, 10-11.30am, Hallward Library, University Park
  • Tuesdays, 10-11.30am, George Green Library, University Park
  • Tuesdays, 2.30-4pm, Djanogly Learning Resource Centre, Jubilee Campus
  • Thursdays, 10-11.30am, James Cameron-Gifford Library, Sutton Bonington

The drop-ins will initially be held on a trial basis for the autumn semester. However, if successful, they will continue for the spring semester. So, do pop along and see us, we’re a friendly bunch!
