Volunteer of the Year for IT Community Consultants Project Mentor

Drew Shearsmith awarded Volunteer of the Year

On 10 November the Vice Chancellor awarded Drew Shearsmith the inaugural Staff Vounteer of the Year Award 2016 for his work with the IT Community Consultants Project. Drew mentors student volunteers from the School of Computer Science who help local Voluntary & Community Sector organisations (V&CSOs) with IT problems.

As a mentor, Drew supports the project with the recruitment and selection of volunteers and delivers an IT training Masterclass. This training gives students a first-hand opportunity to hear what it is like to be an IT Consultant and how they can provide a good customer experience for their V&CSO clients.

“Drew has been part of the team that reviews the ITCC project each year and has helped it to evolve and grow. It was his idea to introduce the Masterclass which enhanced student experience on the project.” said Jaqui Storey, Project Manger for Community Partnerships, who nominated Drew for the award.

Drew has worked for the University for 25 years and is currently the IT Service Delivery Manager for Teaching and Learning.

The IT Community Consultants Project is the joint effort of  Community Partnerships (CP), the Careers and Employability Service (C&ES) and the School of Computer Science (SCS).  It is an opportunity for students to gain valuable employability skills whilst providing some much needed IT support to local VCSOs.
