Cyber attacks target Universities

Following last month’s cyber-attack that threatened NHS computer systems, last week the BBC reported that a University had been hit by a similar cyber-attack.

These ‘ransomware’ attacks can be initiated via ‘phishing’ emails which link to destructive software or by visiting ‘compromised’ websites where pop-ups may also spread a malware infection. Computer systems are then locked and threatened with damage to software, unless payments are made.

We would advise all University staff and students to be extremely vigilant regarding potential ‘phishing’ emails or suspicious attachments. Our ‘Avoid Phishing emails’ website outlines tips on how to spot scam emails and phishing attempts. Visit our  Cyber Safety web pages to learn other ways to stay safe online.
