Three Opportunities for Every First Year at the Graduate Jobs Fair

So, you’re almost at the end of your first year. You’ve made new friends, joined societies and really got stuck into your course. It’s been a whirlwind from start to finish. Graduating and starting a career probably seem a million miles away to you right now – but are they really?

Time flies when you’re having fun

It’s not uncommon for students to wake up one day and feel like they’ve been flung into final year. If you lay the groundwork for life after university now, when that day comes you’ll be ready for it. You don’t need an ironclad plan, you just need ideas. Not many students know exactly what they want to do from day one, and that’s absolutely fine.

First year is for exploring your options, trying different things on for size, and getting a feel for what you might like and dislike.

And that’s what the Graduate Jobs Fair is all about.

At this year’s fair you can…

…Talk to employers

Employers come from across the UK to talk to you. Yes you. They know that making a good first impression counts and if they can pique your interest now, you might still be thinking about them when final year rolls around. Think like this too.

Many of them will have work experience available, which is a great way to get your foot in the door and get a feel for different professions. They also have a lot of insider information. They know what it’s really like to work at their company.

Come prepared with some questions:

  • What kind of work experience do you have for second years?
  • Are you looking for candidates from specific courses?
  • Do students from your internship programme progress into graduate roles within your company?

…Attend a workshop

Is your CV gathering dust in a drawer? Does the thought of an interview fill you with dread? Have you put off creating a profile on LinkedIn? This year’s fair is the perfect opportunity to change all that.

Throughout the day there are a range of short skills workshops, giving you advice on CVs, LinkedIn, video interviews and much more.

…Speak to an expert adviser

We will be out in force to answer your questions. If you’ve been along to an event this year, you’ll probably see some familiar faces; if this is your first foray into Careers, come and say hello we’re really nice!
