Job applications can be challenging but you don’t have to face it alone. Seeking support from a careers adviser might be just what you need to build your career confidence, read below to discover what a one-to-one appointment entails.
The Careers and Employability Service offer one-to-one support and advice to students and graduates who might need some guidance. If you book through MyCareer, under ‘Career Advice Appointments’ you will be able to choose from a range of topics to discuss with a careers adviser from career choice to a CV review. If you’re a graduate, you can still access MyCareer but if you need any help, contact us and we’ll get you logged in.
I’m currently in my final year and looking to explore my options after university, so I booked a careers appointment after struggling with job applications. I chose to have a virtual appointment but there is the option to have one face-to-face. I spoke on the phone to a careers adviser about how I was struggling with progressing in the job process. In response, they had a thorough look at my CV and talked me through what might be missing and how to refine it to put my best foot forward. They also forwarded me an email following our conversation with relevant resources such as finding jobs, applying with a strong application and CV, practising psychometric tests, and interview tips.
The careers meeting reassured me that the job application process is stressful and that I’m not alone, the Careers and Employability Service has several resources and tips on how to prioritise your wellbeing. This provided me with the affirmation that I was doing the right things and that I might just have to keep persevering for a little while. There was also the confidence that I could reach out to them again if I was still struggling and we could develop a plan together so that I have support during this tricky process.
The Careers and Employability Service is available for anyone, in any faculty, at any stage of their university journey and beyond. It is useful if you feel you need a little direction at any point. The one-to-one appointment was a positive experience, and I would recommend booking one if you are looking for careers advice in whatever aspect it may be.
