Hello to PGRs from Kirstin and Lucie
By Kirstin Barnard and Lucie Whitfield, Senior Careers Advisers (Postgraduate Researchers)
Whether you’re new to the university or progressing with your research, in this blog we want to highlight the support we can offer you during your time at Nottingham. Alongside our colleagues, we can help you to develop your career ideas and plans, take advantage of the development opportunities at the university, and make the transition into the world of academia or industry.
To get you started, here are three things you can do to dip your toe into the world of careers.
1. Watch our video
Find out how we can help develop your career during your time at Nottingham.
2. Meet employers at our recruitment fairs
During October, we are hosting four on-campus careers fairs. Come along to the fairs to chat with recruiters about their career opportunities for researchers and develop contacts for the future.
Wednesday 5 October – Government, Public Sector and Charities Careers Fair
Wednesday 12 October – Management, Consulting and Finance Careers Fair
Monday 17 October – Engineering, Science and Technology Careers Fair
Monday 24 October – Law Careers Fair
There is also a wide range of job and sector events taking place during the autumn term. Open to all students, these events give you the chance to ask the panel of professionals and alumni any questions you may have about progressing your career within the sector.
We also run a series of PGR-specific workshops and events covering a wide range of topics from translating your transferable skills for careers outside academia, to strengths profiling, and the application process for academic and non-academic jobs.
3. Take a look at our PGR careers website and blog
Our dedicated website for postgraduate researchers offers a wealth of information for you whether you are just starting to think about your next step or ready to apply for jobs within academia or outside academia. We are also keen to help you make the most of your time at Nottingham to develop your skills and experiences in readiness for applying for opportunities.
On our Careers blog, you will also find articles from PGRs sharing their career journeys. We have a PGR blogger who will be sharing their story over the next year so if you subscribe to the blog, you’ll be able to follow their journey.
Enjoy the start of term and we hope to meet you at some point during your time at Nottingham whether it’s at our events or at a careers appointment.
