Working out what you want to do while in quarantine

By Annie Brown, MA Creative Writing student blogger

Being stuck at home doesn’t mean you’re stuck altogether. Why not use this time to think about what job you’d like to do and what could help you get there? Whether you’re a current student looking to develop skills, a graduate starting out, or wanting a change in career paths, use this time wisely.

Here are my tips for finding your perfect job while in quarantine:

Research

Take the time to look around and research what interests you. Lockdown restrictions have given everyone the gift of time. You can use this time to find work that is right for you. Use online tools and resources such as the Careers website to look at a range of jobs. You should consider graduate schemes, entry-level jobs and even work experience to get a chance to experience a field that interests you.

Try new things

Take the chance to try something that has always interested you. Lots of large companies and organisations are offering free courses and trials during quarantine. Have a look around and try some of them out. Getting a chance to learn from other people or to get work experience in your chosen field will give you a taste of what you’re interested in and help you gain knowledge.

Ask around

Use this time to get in contact with people who are interested in your field. Social media offers groups for almost any industry. It’s a great opportunity to connect and network with people to find out about their experiences in the field you’re interested in, and to make some new friends!

Boost your CV

Another way to investigate your perfect career is to begin something that will boost your CV in that field. There are lots of free online courses covering a variety of skills and topics. For example, as a current student you can access magpie online learning to develop competencies that employers look for. Or build on your digital skills using Google Garage. Having extra skills or a hobby on your CV will stand out to employers and show you’re willing to go above and beyond.

All of these things will help keep your career ticking along. Explore the different Careers tools and resources available to help choose your career or look into the skills and experience you can gain during COVID-19.
