My Nottingham internship experience

By Zoe Waite, Liberal Arts graduate

I participated in the Nottingham Internship Scheme (NIS) in summer 2024, after my final year of study at UoN. I had some foundational experience in social media management and had taken part in digital marketing courses such as the ‘Digital Marketing Academy’, but I wanted to enhance my skills and employability through an internship.

Through the NIS I landed the role of ‘Paid Media Intern’ at Hallam, a leading full-service marketing agency headquartered in Nottingham. I loved my time with Hallam; attending in-house training and events and working across departments, I gained invaluable insights into agency life and the diverse areas of digital marketing. I really felt like the team there wanted me to make the experience my own and encouraged me to get involved as much as possible.

Beyond the hands-on experience, interning with Hallam provided me with an incredible professional network. Even after my internship ended, the team at Hallam continued to support me through job applications and career advice, allowed me to attend company events, and even gave me the opportunity to assist on set for a company-funded video ad that won ‘Marketing Week’ campaign of the year.

My NIS experience was truly transformative, and I have no doubt that it played a key role in helping me secure my current role so soon after graduation. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to kickstart their career!

Top application tips:

1. There are so many opportunities available through the NIS but it is better to be selective and put fewer, high-quality personalised applications forward than more generic applications.

2. Keep the internship process front of mind. It is easy to procrastinate especially at this time of year with assignments and exams. Create a list of internships you want to apply to and tick them off as you go!

3. Be open to feedback! Whether or not you are successful at the interview or application stage asking for feedback is always useful and can help you going forward.

Three reasons you should apply:

1. Build your professional network

2. Explore a potential career path

3. Have an incredibly rewarding summer gaining real world experience that increases your employability

All of the opportunities are with small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), charities or social organisations. They take place during the summer vacation.
