Balancing university with career-focused activities can be overwhelming. Juggling my summer placement prep, a dissertation, self-care, a side hustle, and part-time jobs can often feel chaotic. That’s why I rely on key strategies to ensure my academic goals, wellbeing, and career ambitions remain a focus. Here’s how I’ve found the right balance between academics and career growth.
The reality of balancing studies and work
Balancing university studies and career growth and wellbeing is challenging. I’m preparing for my summer placement, working on my dissertation, writing for a dietitian’s blog, and making time for self-study and self-care. Additionally, I manage a student job and will soon take on another student job and two other roles outside of the university. While this is a full schedule, I have found effective ways to prioritise my commitments and keep my career on track.
Strategies
1. Prioritisation and planning
I use Notion to create a flexible schedule, track commitments and set realistic goals. I start by making a daily priority list and ensuring I balance academic tasks with self-care, social time, and appointments.
2. Task-based scheduling
I focus on completing three key tasks per activity instead of strict schedules. Example:
Dissertation Proposal: Research studies, draft an outline, start intro.
Placement preparation: Review guidelines, complete BDA modules, schedule a visit.
3. Efficient study methods
I structure study periods to avoid long hours of multi-tasking. Example:
Morning: journaling, breakfast, check emails, 15-minute walk
Afternoon: Research methodology, lunch, draft methodology outline, five-minute break
Evening: Edit blog post, light stretching, dinner, run a bath
4. Setting boundaries
I say no to opportunities that don’t align with my long-term goals or fit my schedule.
Making the most of career opportunities
I ensure that every role I take on supports my personal growth and career goals and provides valuable experience. As a student careers blogger and freelance writer, I’ve sharpened my creative writing and explored freelance opportunities in dietetics. My upcoming subject ambassador and exam invigilator positions will further enhance my leadership and organisation skills. Lastly, as a support worker, I’ll be able to do what I’m passionate about which is helping others lead more fulfilled lives. With flexible roles, I can balance work around my schedule.
Tips for finding flexible student jobs that align with career goals
1. Look for zero-hour contracts – roles like exam invigilator, bank support worker, student blogger and ambassador offer flexibility.
2. Consider remote or low-hour jobs – blogging, tutoring, or virtual assistant work fits around studies.
3. Explore university opportunities – on-campus roles like library assistant or research assistant tailored for students.
4. Choose career-building jobs – search for roles that will support your future career.
5. Avoid unpredictable hours – inconsistent schedules that can disrupt studies
6. Check job boards regularly – sites like Unitemps, LinkedIn, Indeed, Save the Student, and StudentJob list flexible jobs. Also, explore part-time or temporary work with the Careers team, for students.
Final thoughts
Finding balance as a student requires planning, flexibility and strategic choices. It’s possible to manage both academic and personal commitments where tasks are prioritised, boundaries are set, and chosen roles align with career goals. Whether through remote work or zero-hours contracts, students have access to many flexible work opportunities.
