My experience in legal tech through the Nottingham Internship Scheme

By Panayiotis Georgiou, LLB Law graduate

Starting my journey with Orbit Legal, a family-run law firm in Long Eaton, marked a significant chapter in my career. As a fresh law graduate, I found this opportunity through the Nottingham Internship Scheme, which simplified the process of connecting with potential employers in my field.

The interview process with Kam and Chris, the owners of Orbit Legal, was both enlightening and encouraging. Their approachability and clear vision for the firm immediately resonated with me. When offered the position of legal technologist, I knew this was not just another job but a stepping stone into an exciting and evolving field.

As a legal technologist, my role was to delve into the world of legal tech, exploring new software and platforms. This wasn’t about conventional legal practices; it was about revolutionising them. My daily tasks involved creating and implementing technological solutions to automate and streamline legal processes. This exposure to innovative tech was not just intellectually stimulating but also practical, providing me with skills that are highly valued in today’s legal landscape.

My work at Orbit Legal was more than just developing tech solutions; it was about understanding how technology can transform the legal industry. The experience I gained here has been invaluable in my current role as a trainee advocate in a reputable law firm in Cyprus. The knowledge and skills I acquired are directly applicable and have given me a unique edge in my career.

The environment at Orbit Legal was one of its best features. Kam and Chris created a workspace that was professional yet warm, blending a rigorous work ethic with a supportive atmosphere. Their mentorship was not limited to professional guidance but extended to personal growth as well. They were always available for advice, pushing me to explore new ideas and challenging me to think outside the box.

Reflecting on my time at Orbit Legal, I realise how crucial this experience has been in shaping my career. It was an opportunity to be at the forefront of a rapidly changing field, and the insights I gained are continually relevant in my current role. The firm’s approach to legal services, focusing on innovation and customisation for small businesses, highlighted the importance of adaptability and client-centred services in the legal profession. If you haven’t already, you should definitely check out their work.

In conclusion, my internship at Orbit Legal was a transformative experience. It was here that I learned the importance of merging law with technology, a skill that is increasingly essential in the modern legal industry. The mentorship, the innovative work environment, and the hands-on experience have all played a significant role in preparing me for my future endeavours in the legal field.
