Thinking of Starting a Business? Discover the Ingenuity Lab

By Josef Bone, Marketing and Digital Officer

We know that a degree from the University of Nottingham opens up a whole host of career options, with our graduates going on to succeed in roles across a range of sectors. But did you know that last year, we were second in the UK for graduate start-ups, with a combined turnover of nearly £160m and investment raised totalling almost £70m*?

The Ingenuity Lab

Students and alumni can explore their entrepreneurial ideas and start their own business at the university’s start-up hub, the Ingenuity Lab, which is based at the Ingenuity Centre on Jubilee Campus.

The Lab is hosting its first ever Open Day on Tuesday 10 May, offering you the chance to take a tour of the Lab, join in taster activities (such as business surgeries, one-to-one mentoring and seminars) and discover the wide range of businesses being developed by our members.

There will also be the opportunity to test your idea with our expert business mentors, with prizes on offer for the best ideas!

From business advice and mentoring from expert professionals to networking opportunities and bookable desk space, the Lab offers a friendly and inspiring environment for anyone interested in starting a business. Membership is free to all students, staff and alumni of the university.

Current MSc student Tom Sproull, joined the Ingenuity Lab in 2021 to gain practical support for his sustainable clothing business, Cove.

“The Ingenuity Lab provides an incredible setup for young entrepreneurs,” said Tom. “Not only is the Lab a fantastic space to work in, but the opportunities available and the people you meet are second to none. I’m very grateful to be a part of it!”

Lab Manager Dr Terri Holloway said: “The Ingenuity Lab provides an amazing opportunity for students, staff, and alumni to access free support to develop and scale their business ventures. Our Open Day is designed to give current and future entrepreneurs a chance to sample our amazing free services and support. We can’t wait to welcome you face-to-face for what will be a truly exciting event!”
