Why I Chose Part-Time Work

From December 2020 to May 2021 during my masters, I worked as a Library Adviser at Nottingham University Business School Library. I found and applied for this role through Unitemps. This role involved supporting customers with using library services, facilities, and resources, while also ensuring compliance with health and safety in line with Covid-19 risk assessments.

My motivation

My motivation for pursuing temporary work with Unitemps was three-fold:

1. Firstly, I wanted to step out of my comfort zone by immersing myself in learning about a new industry while gaining transferrable skills in the process.
2. Secondly, as an international student, a part-time job would provide me with a sense of financial independence.
3. Thirdly, during the peak of a global pandemic which was plagued with numerous lockdowns, a job was an avenue for me to meet new people and an opportunity to venture beyond the confines of my flat!

I was thrilled at the idea of engaging in work that interweaved with my MSc in Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Management, as well as my research-related career ambitions.

What I learned

Six months in the role enabled me to master skills that I already had, such as organisation, collaboration, and customer service while simultaneously enriching me with new skills, including research acumen and a greater understanding of business-specific literary resources.

I also left the role having been trained on manual handling and fire safety, both handy skills that I will use in every new role I enter, as well as building valuable professional connections.

Working at the University that I also study at and entering the library as a student then roaming around it as a staff member was such a full circle experience; this has been a highlight of my masters year.

My time at the Business School Library was a journey full of endless possibilities that prepared me for the world of full-time work – I thoroughly enjoyed it and that is all thanks to Unitemps!
