What Happens in a Careers Appointment?

By Jennifer Balloch, Employability Officer

There are a whole host of reasons why you might decide to book an appointment to speak to a member of our team. Appointments vary in length and you can use them to get help and support with any aspect of your career planning. Whether you’re starting at the very beginning, or have a clear idea; we are here to help you every step of the way.

Here are some questions to think about to decide which appointment is best for you.

Can someone look at my CV?

Of course! Whether you haven’t looked at your CV since school and would like some tips and advice on how to tailor it, or you have been working on it for a while and are after someone to review it, we can help. Book a 15 minute ‘CV appointment’ with a member of our team, or come to a drop-in.

I’ve written an application form or covering letter, can someone look at it for me?

Yeah, no worries. We can help you with any part of the application process. Book a ‘job application and interview support appointment’ and we will review what you have written, and offer feedback and advice.

I’ve got an interview coming up, can anyone help me to prepare?

Firstly, well done! There are a number of ways we can help. You could book a ‘job application and interview support appointment’ for some general preparation. We can also discuss possible questions you may face and how to prepare answers. Or you could book a ‘mock interview’ with a career adviser to get some real time practice in.

I’m not really sure what to do – with my life! – can you help?

Although we can’t help plan your life, we can help you plan your career. From discussing what alumni from your course have gone on to do, to thinking about your own strengths and personality traits, to researching employers and particular industries, we can help you every step of the way. For a more in-depth discussion, book a 30 minute ‘careers advice’ appointment.

How do I book?

To book any of the appointments discussed in this post, all you need to do is log in to your My Career account here.

Wherever you’re based, you can find a convenient appointment near you. We have teams on Jubilee, Sutton Bonington and  University Park campuses, the Medical School and University hospital sites. Find out more.
