Changing my career and help from the Careers team

By Bhavin Sisodaria, BSc Industrial Economics graduate

At the end of June and the start of July 2024, I booked a few interview support appointments with Bernadette Dooley, Careers Adviser, to maximise my chances of doing well in an interview for a dream job I had applied for.

The role was for an assistant asset strategy manager and, because it was an ideal role, I was extremely nervous about the interview.

Rethinking my career direction

I graduated with a BSc Industrial Economics from UoN in 2020 and I started my career in 2021 in supply chain within the pharmaceutical industry. After two years, I quit my job in July 2023, for the purpose of travelling as I did not have this opportunity when I graduated.

This also gave me time to reflect on my career and I decided I wanted a career change. I wanted to reconnect with a career related to my degree and recently I had been reading my notes from university when clearing out my room. Therefore, I applied to a range of roles across asset and wealth management and finally found the company I wanted to work for Transport for London.

Careers support for UoN alumni

Many applications later and following a catch-up with one of my family members, who had just graduated from UoN, I rediscovered the UoN Careers and Employability Service.  They have a commitment to providing careers support for UoN graduates for life.

I booked an appointment by telephone with Bernadette. We had a detailed and impactful call regarding the job I had an interview for, including a mock interview which you had kindly prepared for prior to our first call.

This call went so well with you. I took the feedback you provided me with to improve and booked another call with you to ensure I had made the right changes in my interview answers and style. I received positive and really helpful feedback and you helped me with some more questions that  I personally feel were powerful and helped me significantly.

The job offer

A few weeks later, I received positive news of a job offer, regarding my dream role that you had helped me with significantly. I’m extremely grateful for the support that you have given me throughout this process, and without you, I would have possibly not even received this offer.

You have been an absolute star, and the way you work in the Careers team amazes me. Every call we have had, you have always made me feel very comfortable and at ease, and when required also challenged me to ensure that I can become the best, alongside, feedback after every call. I really appreciate your support once again, and I will always remember it.
