Challenges are unavoidable in any career. Setbacks, unexpected changes, or moments of self-doubt are bound to happen. A person’s ability to be resilient and stay motivated through tough times is what determines their success. The key to long-term career fulfilment is to continue moving forward—through motivation—and come back stronger – through resilience – while maintaining confidence in your abilities.

1. Understanding challenges as opportunities

Working in a busy, fast-paced hospital ward with staff shortages and new transfers had been incredibly challenging for me. Mistakes happened, and self-doubt crept in, but these experiences also helped me identify my strengths. Despite the obstacles, I gained valuable professional and personal development opportunities. Self-reflection during this time allowed me to grow my confidence and improve my skills, making me more adaptable and prepared for future challenges.

2. Developing a resilient mindset

I once lost my confidence and self-worth in a work environment that left me dealing with constant chronic pain and a feeling of emptiness. Later, struggling with severe depression and anxiety, I found the courage to leave. I travelled abroad solo and self-studied at home – researching nutrition topics, attending webinars, and reading to expand my awareness. This passion and determination led me to return to college to gain the necessary qualifications before pursuing a career as a student dietitian.

3. Setting clear goals and small milestones

Previously, I had a habit of focusing too much on the distant future, often setting unrealistic goals. Learning to focus on the present allowed me to create measurable, achievable short-term goals. For instance, enrolling in online courses and being a student career blogger helped me develop essential writing skills, which are stepping stones toward my long-term goal of working remotely as a freelance dietitian.

4. Building a strong support system

I have learned that handling everything alone can be overwhelming and draining. Seeking peer, mentor, and colleague support has been crucial in my journey. Attending networking groups and connecting with other university students and professionals has given me valuable guidance, encouragement, and new career opportunities.

5. Practicing self-care and maintaining work-life balance

Career challenges can be mentally exhausting, making self-care an essential practice, especially for someone like me who experiences anxiety. Engaging in activities like reformer Pilates, yoga, and mindfulness practices—including journaling, meditation, and listening to motivational podcasts—helps me maintain a positive mindset. These practices calm my mind and body, improve my breathing, and support restful sleep, allowing me to tackle each day with renewed energy.

6. Celebrating small wins

Acknowledging small achievements is vital in maintaining motivation. Every step forward, no matter how minor, deserves recognition. Rewarding myself for completing a goal, whether through a break, a treat, or simply reflecting on my progress, keeps me engaged and confident in my abilities. Check out Quick Wins for Early Success.

7. Staying inspired and continuously learning

When my motivation disappears, I turn to inspiring sources to reignite my passion and remind myself why I started my career journey. Books, podcasts, TED Talks, and stories of successful individuals offer me fresh perspectives and renewed determination. Here are some of my favourite sources of inspiration:

Podcasts:

1. On Purpose with Jay Shetty

2. The Mel Robbins Podcast

Books:

1. Good Vibes, Good Life: How Self Love Is the Key to Unlocking Your Greatness — Vex King

2. This is How We Do It: A Pep Talk – Kevin Hart

Staying motivated and resilient in your career during challenging times requires self-awareness, adaptability, and perseverance. Viewing setbacks as opportunities, building a strong support system, setting realistic goals, and prioritising self-care can make all the difference. Success involves failures and growing from the challenges you face. Book an appointment with the Careers team to discuss any part of your career journey.
