KTP Associate Q&A spotlight
By Weiyao Meng, KTP Associate
Tell us a bit about you
I am from China and have been in the UK for nearly ten years, studying and working. With a PhD in Computer Science, my research interests include automated algorithm design, combinatorial optimisation, and machine learning for data-driven decision-making in critical sustainability challenges. I have previously worked on transportation-related projects and actively engaged in academic activities as a reviewer for leading journals and conferences and as an organiser of academic events.
Why did you choose to become a KTP Associate?
KTPs enable multi-way knowledge transfer. During my PhD, I was involved in the final stage of a KTP project for a short time, which gave me first hand experience of the benefits of university-industry collaboration. What attracted me most to this project was the vision, which deeply resonated with me. It provides a platform to apply my knowledge for positive societal impact while learning and growing alongside like-minded people.
Tell us about the company and your role?
I work at Strategic Innovation, a Cambridge-based innovation consultancy dedicated to sustainability. The company has expertise across multiple sectors, particularly in food, beverage, and FMCG industries. Our approach combines creativity with a strong foundation in science, AI, and data-driven insights.
The collaboration with Nottingham University Business School enhances our data-driven insight capabilities, supporting the vision of “Think Better World” (TBW)—advancing food system sustainability through a shared understanding of both challenges and opportunities.
As a Data Scientist, I develop technical capabilities for TBW, leveraging advanced data science and software engineering while working closely with clients to deliver impactful, real-world solutions.
What has been the most memorable part of your KTP experience?
The project has been running for nearly a year, with many memorable moments. Gaining a deeper understanding of our vision and feeling the support of my team have been especially impactful. One standout memory was attending Groundswell. Standing on farmland and hearing diverse perspectives, it made me reflect on my role in driving change. It reinforced our shared vision and inspired me to make continuous and meaningful impact.
How has the KTP experience benefitted you?
Working with a supportive, collaborative team has been an incredible experience. I have deepened my expertise, especially in AI, while applying cutting-edge technologies in real-world scenarios. Beyond technical skills, I have expanded my commercial awareness and knowledge of food production and health. Additionally, I have enhanced my communication and interpersonal skills, which are just as essential as technical expertise.
How did you find the application process?
The interview was well-structured with two rounds: the first focused on my background and technical skills, while the in-person second round included a presentation session and an in-depth project discussion. Rather than a traditional Q&A, it felt like a meaningful conversation, which I truly enjoyed. As a woman in computer science, being selected from a record-breaking 100 applicants made the experience even more rewarding.
Would you recommend becoming a KTP Associate?
I definitely would encourage people in my network to consider the KTP programme. Particularly for those who are uncertain about their career direction, KTP provides the perfect opportunity to gain experience in both research and industry and allows you to explore different aspects of your strengths and weaknesses while working on impactful real-world challenges. This experience is valuable, no matter which career path you choose in the future.
