Top 10 University for Work Experience

By Chris Colegate, Careers and Employability Consultant – Placements

The University of Nottingham has been ranked seventh place in the Rate my Placement Best Universities for Work Experience table. This position is informed by student feedback on the support, resources and opportunities made available to them and we are very pleased to feature so highly in this ranking.

Demand and engagement from our students in work experience grows year on year. We know students can benefit enormously from this activity in terms of employment prospects and for many it can help improve academic performance and degree attainment.

Despite our existing strong position in the Best Universities for Work Experience ranking, we will continue to grow and develop our services to ensure you have the very best opportunity to access meaningful work experience during your time at the University of Nottingham.

How can we help you?

We can help you think about what is right for you at the right time, and support you to navigate your options. We can help you consider many different options.

Placement years

500+ Nottingham students choose this route each year from our engineers and computer scientists, to business school students, psychologists, economists and many more. Please come to see us in year one and two of your undergraduate programme to get ahead of the curve. If you aren’t already on a degree with a placement year you can add this in via the Optional Placement Year.

Internships, vacation schemes, spring weeks

We advertise thousands of opportunities via MyCareer that you can access and run a range of internship programmes exclusive to Nottingham students including the Nottingham Internship Scheme and the new Nottingham Micro-Placements initiative.

Volunteering

Often students will really want the internship or placement words on their CV, but volunteering is a brilliant way to build experience and develop a wide range of skills that are highly sought after by employers. Have a look at our Volunteering webpage to find out where you can volunteer within the UK or internationally.

Part-time work

Like volunteering, never underestimate the value of part-time work. Working part-time during your studies in areas such as hospitality, customer service, retail, and many more, can be hugely beneficial. Visit our part-time work webpage to find out how to source vacancies on- and off-campus.
