My Knowledge Transfer journey

By Jordan Fischer, human factors graduate at Cadent

Over the past year, I have had the incredible opportunity to work within the gas distribution industry through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). This position focuses on embedding knowledge and new capabilities related to human factors and ergonomics to help manage and reduce the risk of fatigue among employees.

This journey has not only been professionally rewarding but has also provided me with the opportunity for immense personal growth.

My role

In my first six months, I designed a field-based study. This involved travelling across England to observe and conduct interviews with gas engineers to understand their perceptions of fatigue and its management within the industry.

These insights have since directed the project towards extensive literature reviews. My current task involves analysing and synthesizing research on fatigue management to formulate recommendations for the industry. This phase has been intensive and enlightening, and I am now on my fourth review out of six.

Why KTP

Choosing the KTP was a big and important decision for me to make. It offers a unique experience including practical experience and academic research. It opens doors to career development and exciting opportunities. Having never left my hometown or country before, this role has allowed me to grow both professionally and personally.

Leading a project straight out of university was an exciting challenge that has led to significant learning and development, and I am sure it will carry on into the last half of the project. The KTP has created numerous opportunities. It has allowed me to develop critical project management skills, gain in-depth industry knowledge, and expand my professional network.

The exposure to real-world challenges and the chance to contribute to meaningful improvements in the gas distribution industry has been rewarding. Additionally, there has been a lot of personal growth as the KTP encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and embrace new experiences.

The application process

The recruitment process for the KTP was straightforward and well-structured. After submitting my CV, the application required detailed responses to questions about my experiences and past accomplishments.

This allowed me to showcase my skills and qualifications before the interview stage. I went through two interviews, with the final one involving a short presentation followed by questions. Despite being an international candidate, the university provided excellent support throughout the visa process, ensuring a smooth transition.

Thoroughly recommended

For anyone considering a KTP, I cannot recommend it enough. Take the opportunity with both hands as it offers such incredible support to flourish in your career while also focusing on your personal development. The skills I have developed have positioned me well for any future opportunities.

In conclusion, my journey with the KTP in the gas distribution industry has been transformative. It has provided a platform for professional and personal growth, equipping me with the skills and experiences needed to navigate my career with confidence and again for anyone considering a KTP, I highly encourage you to take the opportunity and go on a journey of growth and development.
