Choosing Melbourne: A year of growth and adventure
By Ria Jobanputra, chemistry with an international study year student
My time in Melbourne was an incredible adventure filled with growth and unforgettable experiences. From exploring the city’s vibrant culture to making lifelong friends, every day was a new chapter. I learned and grew in ways I never imagined, and the memories I made will stay with me forever.
Flexibility is key
I initially set my sights on Singapore for my study abroad experience, but when that option fell through, I realised the importance of flexibility.
This unexpected change allowed me to explore other possibilities. Researching universities revealed that while the University of Melbourne was a popular choice, its high competition rate made me consider alternatives.
Monash University, also located in Melbourne but with a less central campus, offered a strong chemistry programme and higher admission chances. Prioritising my academic goals, I decided to apply to Monash and was fortunate to be accepted.
First impressions
Arriving in Melbourne was both exhilarating and overwhelming. The sheer distance from home, coupled with the unfamiliar currency, made for a steep learning curve. While the excitement of being in a new city was evident, the reality of higher living costs, especially for groceries, quickly set in. Despite these challenges, the city’s energy was infectious.
Exploring its vibrant streets with newfound friends was an unforgettable experience, and we quickly fell into the role of eager tourists. The shared adventure of being far from home fostered instant connections with other exchange students, creating a supportive community that felt like a second family.
Academic challenges and triumphs
As the sole exchange student in an integrated master’s programme, I initially faced unique challenges. Being the only one whose year counted towards the degree could sometimes feel isolating. However, this unexpected situation became an opportunity for growth. By proactively seeking out connections within my course, I not only built lasting friendships but also developed essential networking skills.
The flexible Australian academic system, allowing students to choose their units, created a dynamic learning environment. Each lab group offered a chance to meet new people, expanding my social circle and enriching my overall experience.
The independence fostered by this system, coupled with the support of new friends, enabled me to balance academic excellence with a vibrant social life. I even secured a research assistantship, proving that a fulfilling Australian experience can coexist with academic success.
Summer adventures
That summer was, without a doubt, the most incredible time of my life. After enduring two winters in a row due to the flipped academic year, I was desperate for an adventure.
My travels through Australia were incredible, from the vibrant east coast to the stunning west. Swimming alongside a shark in the Great Barrier Reef and sharing the ocean with a turtle in Ningaloo were unforgettable highlights.
But I knew I couldn’t be so close to New Zealand without exploring it. Being on the other side of the world, I wanted to make the most of this opportunity. New Zealand was everything I’d hoped for and more – from its breathtaking landscapes to its thrilling outdoor activities. I encourage everyone to embrace the chance to travel and explore. While unexpected challenges, like the cyclone we encountered, can arise, they only serve to make the journey more memorable.
Becoming a Melbournian
As the months unfolded, I underwent a transformation, evolving from a British visitor to someone who felt intrinsically Australian. The daily rituals of beach runs, mesmerising sunsets, and indulging in frozen yogurt became the new norm. What once felt alien gradually turned into a familiar and cherished lifestyle.
A deep-rooted attachment to the place and its people blossomed within me. It’s essential to acknowledge the cultural differences, especially as a person of colour, but with an open mind and time, these disparities become less pronounced. Sharing a house with friends was the final piece of the puzzle, creating a genuine sense of belonging and immersing me fully in the Australian way of life.
Personal growth and unforgettable memories
Without a doubt, my time abroad was the most transformative experience of my life. I underwent significant personal growth, developing independence, confidence, and a charisma I never knew I possessed.
Stepping outside my comfort zone led to thrilling adventures, like skydiving, and valuable cultural experiences, especially in my field of chemistry. These experiences were made even more special by the incredible friendships I formed. The bonds I created with an exceptional group of girls are irreplaceable.
I strongly encourage everyone to seize similar opportunities. Time abroad passes incredibly quickly, so make the most of every moment. I long to return to those unforgettable experiences.
Choosing to study abroad during your degree at Nottingham can help you develop key skills and qualities that employers look for in new recruits. The experience will provide lots of examples of when and how you have demonstrated skills when completing application forms or during an interview. Experiencing and understanding different cultures will also help you wherever you work in the future.
