The support that made my dream job a reality
By Para Saraiya, MSc Industrial Engineering and Operations Management graduate and Graduate Manufacturing Engineer at Airbus
I graduated from the University of Nottingham in September 2023 and my primary goal was to secure a position with a leading manufacturing company, particularly in aerospace. I was driven by a passion for innovation in this sector and had always aspired to work for a top company like Airbus, the most renowned aerospace company in the world.
I’m working on the Graduate Manufacturing Engineering Scheme at Airbus and currently rotated into the R & D Department where I’m involved in digital projects.
Developing my skills at university
During my time at Nottingham, I actively participated in activities that significantly contributed to my professional development.
One standout experience was the Nottingham Consultancy Challenge, where I honed my leadership and teamwork skills and gained insights into UK business practices.
A pivotal moment was securing a Researcher Academy placement in my field, which provided hands-on experience and deepened my understanding of industry standards. These activities were instrumental in preparing me for my career and successfully landing my role at Airbus.
Additionally, I engaged with the Careers team extensively, including booking an appointment to have my CV reviewed.
Using LinkedIn
I found my role at Airbus through LinkedIn and the Careers team at the university was incredibly helpful throughout the job search process.
They guided me in practising for assessment centres and advised me to seek out potential opportunities in my field. Their assistance was crucial in navigating the job market effectively. I did not meet Airbus at a careers fair but instead utilised the comprehensive resources and support provided by the university to secure this position.
Managing and leading projects
My role involves managing and leading projects in an agile environment, collaborating with prestigious partners such as Capgemini, AMRC, Dassault Systemes and several universities. The sponsorship process was smooth; I am on a Skilled Worker visa, and Airbus will continue to sponsor me until I achieve permanent residency.
My advice to international students at the university
My journey was driven by a clear vision and unwavering determination. To international students aiming to make a mark in the UK job market, my advice is to stay persistent and proactive.
Make full use of Careers team —they can be transformative.
Don’t be discouraged by rejections; they are part of the journey and provide opportunities for growth. Apply broadly, seek internships, and continuously improve your skills to boost your CV.
Trust in yourself, remain focused, and keep pushing forward; as the right opportunity will eventually come.
