Money and skills hand in hand: my Unitemps journey
By Pooja Mooladka, nutritional sciences student
Like most international master’s students, I arrived in September, hoping to pursue studies while covering living expenses with part-time jobs. Initially, I struggled to find work and spent months relentlessly applying for jobs without success, which led to constant worry about my depleting financial balance. The rejections piled up, and I felt increasingly anxious. Then, I discovered the Careers and Employability Services provided by the university and enrolled in Unitemps.
Using the Unitemps Microsoft forms, I could easily apply for jobs that suited my schedule and skills. What truly stood out was the transparency in pay and the inclusion of holiday pay, varying according to the role.
First step: student flyering
My first assignment through Unitemps was as a student flyering assistant. This role was not only a source of income but also a lesson in perseverance. Aristotle’s words, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit,” resonated deeply with me. Encouraged by this initial success, I began applying for various on-campus jobs that aligned with my abilities. I refined my application skills, thanks to the resources available through the Careers and Employability Services website.
Securing a role at UNIP: the receptionist position
The real turning point in my Unitemps journey came when I applied for a receptionist position in February at the University of Nottingham Innovation Park (UNIP). With prior experience in a similar role, I felt confident about my application. The process was seamless; after submitting my form, Unitemps informed me that the employer was eager to hire me. Alongside another student, I started with a two-week assignment, which has since been extended to July due to our performance and the employer’s satisfaction. The management at UNIP has been incredibly accommodating, scheduling shifts around our class hours. The convenience of having the job located on campus has been a bonus. Unitemps continuously keeps us updated on regulations and monitors our working hours as we have limited working hours during the term.
Skills obtained:
- Networking
- Communication
- Time Management
- Customer Service
- Administrative Skills
These part-time roles have not only supported me financially but have also provided insights into the job market, and the work culture in the UK. As a nutrition student, I know that these skills will be crucial in dealing with clients and ensuring smooth operations in any future role, whether in a clinical setting or a corporate environment.
I wholeheartedly recommend that every student explore the opportunities offered by Unitemps and persist despite any setbacks. Even a short period role is a step toward greater growth and learning, and of course, it provides some extra pocket money to enjoy exploring Nottingham without interrupting your studies.
If you’re looking to gain valuable experience that fits round your studies, explore the vacancies available on the Unitemps website.
