Transitioning to life at university as an international student
By Aditya Taneja, management student
As I reflect on my time as an international student at the Nottingham University Business School, a profound sense of accomplishment and gratitude washes over me. My journey at NUBS has been a transformative experience, both personally and professionally. Beyond the classroom, my active participation in co-curricular activities played a pivotal role in shaping this enriching experience.
NUBS provides an array of resources that extend far beyond the realm of theoretical knowledge, allowing students to practically apply what they’ve learned in real-world scenarios. Engaging in co-curricular activities early on was imperative, as it helped me develop essential life skills. It enabled me to not only recognise my strengths but also identify areas that required improvement, giving me a head start in understanding my potential.
One pivotal moment was when I was entrusted with the role of Student Representative, leading the Learning Community Forum meetings. This experience not only enhanced my leadership skills but also allowed me to make a tangible impact on the student community. Furthermore, I had the privilege of working as the Engagement Officer for the Behavioural Economics Society, consult for Enterprise Rent A Car, collaborate with Paragon Law and Common Purpose through various Nottingham Advantage Award modules and the Company-Based Challenge, and even working with Enactus Nottingham as a Consulting Intern.
These experiences not only honed my professional skills but also provided me with a realistic view of the corporate world. I delved deep into volunteer work with IntoUniversity, giving back to the community while gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by underprivileged students. This instilled in me a sense of empathy and social responsibility. Beyond academics, I even rediscovered my long-lost passion for badminton. Using the resources provided by NUBS, I could explore areas such as sales and investment banking, further shaping my career aspirations.
I encourage you to embark on your co-curricular journey early and embrace the opportunities that come your way. These experiences act as essential building blocks for your personal and professional growth. The skills developed, directly and indirectly, through these experiences will not only shape your academic journey but also your life. Your time at NUBS will be marked by moments of challenge, growth, and immense satisfaction. The relationships built through these experiences, the leadership you develop, and the network you cultivate will serve as valuable assets for your journey beyond the university.
Embrace every opportunity, as there is something to learn from everything. Get involved early, and pave the way for your remarkable journey. Your postgraduate experience at Nottingham University Business School will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on your lives and futures.
