Five Reasons to Attend Engineering Employability Week
By Grace Pownall, student blogger
Are you a student from the Faculty of Engineering?
Want help finding a graduate job or industrial placement in engineering?
If you’re reading this blog, it’s likely that your answer to both of those questions is yes! In that case, here are five reasons why you should go to the inaugural Engineering Employability Week.
1. Network, network, network!
A range of professional bodies and companies are coming to Nottingham to give students advice on finding work and increasing their employability. There will be workshops and presentations from institutions such as ICE, IChemE, IET and IMEchE.
This is a valuable opportunity to get your name out there to the right people. It is also a chance to get to know the friendly folk at the Careers and Employability Service, and find out about the wide range of advice and help they can give you.
2. Get advice specific to engineering
During Engineering Employability Week the world revolves around engineering students – we are the people who keep it turning after all! – so you’ll be able to get information specific to your discipline, which you might not get at generic careers events or guides.
All the events are targeted at you – how you can increase your success when hunting for jobs in relevant industries.
3. Find out exactly what employers want
A whole host of companies, such as Severn Trent Water, GSK, AECOM, and Caterpillar are visiting to meet Nottingham’s best engineering students and impart their wisdom.
Companies are holding skills sessions, workshops, mock interviews and assessment centres for students. This is a great chance to find out what recruiters are looking for during the hiring process, giving you a great advantage when it comes to application time. Find out how to book your place now.
4. Test yourself
Hone your interpersonal skills and beat those nerves by taking part in mock interviews and assessment centres, without the pressure of a potential job weighing you down. Practice makes perfect, plus it is a good way to identify your personal strengths and weaknesses to make sure you’re aware and prepared for the real thing.
5. It’s after exams!
With no more pesky assignments or deadlines or dreaded exams, fill your free time with some employability-enhancing workshops. It’s never too early to start thinking about next year’s applications, as many companies release their vacancies early in the autumn term. Beat the crowd and be ready before anyone else.
Engineering Employability Week kicks off on June 6 alongside the Graduate Jobs Fair. Throughout the week you will get to hear from professional bodies and employers to help you get your career off to a head-start. View the full line-up of workshops online and book your place now.
