Team of the Week: Women’s Football 2nd

This week we see the Football Women’s 2nd team as our Team of the Week, by beating the unbeaten of 2 years, Leicester 1st team 1-0! A great result for the girls as last season they narrowly missed out, with Leicester winning by 1-0 in a very close game.

The first half entailed Nottingham being all over Leicester in their half, yet Nottingham couldn’t quite get it in the back on the net. The ball rarely went over the half way line, though when it did, Leicester didn’t take their chances. The constant pressure carried on into the second half, with a goal coming around the 60 minute mark. Ellie Sims ran with the ball down the left wing, Sinead Sunner overlapped her as she passed the ball down the line. Sinead then knocked the ball past her, outpaced her and crossed the ball in with her left foot. The goalkeeper dived and missed it allowing Hannah Drescher, with pressure from the defender, to kick it in.

The 2nd team’s player of the match this week went to Lulu Szego, who even though has a great game every week, was particularly on form this week. Although playing as left back, she took multiple opportunities to shoot at Leicester’s goal, leading to her having nearly all the votes for player of the match!

Captain of the team, Abby Nield, said how proud she was of every single one of the girls due to the high level of effort everyone put in. All of the team work and commitment were admirable, as was football. It was the ongoing encouragement and support from the girls and coach Jose that kept everyone going until the final whistle. Over the season the girl’s quality of football has developed exceptionally, with a new style of play coupled with the amazing quality of football, caught Leicester off guard. This allowed the girls to beat the team that had been unbeaten for so long.

The goals of the team this season was to finish as high as possible in the league. With the next game against Loughborough 3’s, who are just behind them in the league, the girls aim to finish the league in 3rd place. A win against the Loughborough side would mean they were safely staying in their division and would have a great chance of placing 3rd.

Well done girls and good luck in your match next week!
