The Creative Student Network at the University of Nottingham

The unique Creative Student Network was the reason I chose to study at Nottingham. It is a collection of talented students, staff, academics and industry representatives that come together to provide an insight into the creative industries.

Throughout the year the network hosts a variety of workshops that aim to better a students understanding of working within the industry and improve their chances of gaining access to such a highly competitive business. The past two years brought us the “CV and Networking Workshop”, a beneficial event that invited industry professionals to the university to look over student’s resumes and cover letters. The professionals, who brought experience with them from various areas including film, television, marketing and game design, also took part in a “speed-dating” exercise where students had the opportunity to ask any burning questions they had about the industry.

Truly the most exciting aspect of the Creative Student Network are the internships that they offer. All students in second year and above (with at least a 2.1 average) have the opportunity to apply for internships both in London and Los Angeles. Depending on the student’s interests and aspirations, successful applicants will work at world-renowned companies such as 20th Century Fox and the Art Directors Guild to name a few.

As well as these official university internships, the Creative Student Network also regularly posts information on social media about local internships and work experience opportunities in and around the East Midlands.

I had the opportunity to be on the publicities committee for CSN last year and had the responsibility of creating advertising for events both online and around the university. The network is also a very helpful way to find like-minded others to help organise your own events. For example last year I was also part of a team that set up the Blue Sun Film Festival, Nottingham University’s first student film festival.
