The road to BUCS Nationals: Ellen Mahenthiralingam
The BUCS Nationals just a few days away, it’s time to profile another of our sports scholars – badminton expert Ellen Mahenthiralingam will be competing in the Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles events throughout the weekend, so has a busy few days ahead of her!
Originally hailing from Vancouver, Canada but now based in both Nottingham and Cardiff, 18-year old Ellen has been playing badminton since the age of 7, getting her start at with local junior club in Cardiff called the Western Devils before going on to represent Wales aged 13.
With expert coaching from Chris Rees alongside fellow UoN National Badminton League (NBL) player Matthew Hughes and head coach Martyn Lewis, right-hander Ellen played some of the best badminton of her career to help Wales win the team event at the 2011 UK School Games tournament, before going on to win the Girls Doubles event in 2012.
A current Nottingham undergrad studying English and German, subjects she is passionate about along with creative writing, Ellen’s ambition is to compete at the Commonwealth Games as well as hopefully getting her writing published one day. She’s also part of the UoN Badminton NBL team, having recently played alongside Kristian Roebuck in the mixed doubles against the University of Birmingham team.
She likes to relax with movies, Friends marathons and a good book or two, and is always happy to try any other sport when she wants to take a break from training and competing in badminton. If she wasn’t a badminton player, she’d either be a speed skater or, all being well, a professional author.
Follow Ellen on Twitter for updates throughout the weekend, and to hear about her exploits in upcoming NBL fixtures.
You can follow all of the action from the Nationals through the UoN Sport Twitter, Facebook and blog, as well as the official BUCS website for a live feed of results, photos and videos. Also keep an eye on the BUCS Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube pages for updates across the weekend.
