Getting started with blood flow restriction (BFR) training

Have you heard of blood flow restriction (BFR) training before? BFR training is a highly researched training method that is used to reap the benefits of heavy weight training whilst using low to moderate weights. Here’s all you need to know to find out if blood restriction training is for you…

What is BFR training?

The BFR training method involves using a tight band or a strap to cause some form compression, restricting blood flow the muscle, whilst carrying out exercises for higher repetitions. BFR cuffs are the safest and most effective method of training this way.

How does blood flow restriction work?

By restricting blood flow to the muscle; the amount of oxygen carried to the muscle is reduced. This causes a hypoxic environment in the muscle which can aid in many beneficial adaptations to your training.

What are the benefits?

BFR can improve your muscular strength and endurance, whilst exercising with lower resistance.

BFR training can also be beneficial to individuals who may be unable to lift heavy weights because of pain or injury. However, it is important that you speak with your physiotherapist or GP before attempting BFR to find out if this is suitable and safe.

SAGA Fitness are offering students 15% off the SAGA BFR Cuffs for a limited time – the world’s first wireless, auto calibrating blood restriction cuffs. Using intelligent calibration technology, the BFR cuffs aim to help people train smarter, work harder and achieve more.
