Title: Effectiveness, selectivity and kinetics of novel biofuel production via ionic liquid catalysed conversion of palm waste to levulinate esters.

Grant provider: FRGS, RM 125,750.00

Malaysia produced 19.2 million tonnes of palm oil in 2013 from over 5 million hectares of plantation lands. However, 70% by volume from the processing of fresh fruit bunches is removed as waste. This biomass is a valuable renewable raw material for the production of various value-added products. One such product is levulinate esters, which have wide applications in food and petrochemical industries in addition to being a potential biofuel. The aim of this project is to develop a novel, greener, and more sustainable process for levulinate esters production from palm waste using natural based ionic liquid catalyst.
