How international are our publications?
I saw an interesting article (International research coauthorship – trends and implications) recently from blog.universitiesuk.co.uk, which discusses how collabotaion with international partners has changed over the past few years.
I thought it might be interesting to see how we do, and compare ourselves against another well known institution in the UK. It shoud be noted that this is really just a simple search on Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge. More deeper analysis might be worthwhile (volunteers, perhaps to publish some deeper analysis?).

This indicates that we have 84 (the sum of all the other papers, but excluding the MALAYSIA papers) (77.78%, when expressed as a percetage of the total number of papers) countries that we have collaborated with. However, we note the following:
- We cannot say that 84 (and therefore 77.78%) of our papers are written with international authors as one paper may have been written with authors from more than one country.
- The results might alo be skewed as I looked at one of my own papers and my joint affilitaion (UNUK and UNMC) shows as two countries. Quite rightly, but I am not sure that this is in the spirit of the analysis, but it does open the possibility that if we all had joint affilitaions that would significantly improve our international exposure!

This indicates that UNUK have 2366 (the sum of all the other papers, but excluding the ENGLAND and UNITED KINGDOM) (87.82%, when expressed as a percetage of the total number of papers – 2694) countries that they have collaborated with. However, we note the following:
- We note the same caveats as we noted above with regard to the UNMC table.
- It is interesting to see that of all the UNUK publications, only 96.362% have been written by authors based in England :-)!
- The above is not explained by the one (0.037%) paper published in the United Kingdom.
As I say, this is just a very quick glance at the data that this available (and would certainly not come out favourably in a peer review!) but it does show the type of data that is available, which might deserve deeper analysis.
