BUCS Big Wednesday 2015: A sliver away from victory for Men’s Lacrosse

Our final event of the day was the Men’s Lacrosse Championship Cup final between Nottingham 1st, squaring off against the team who denied them premier league victory this season – Durham 1st.

This was the third meeting for these two teams this season, and with Durham victors on both occasions they were arguably favourites going into the final. In fact, Durham Men’s Lacrosse team are unbeaten in the league and cup for five consecutive years, topped the Northern Premiership this year ahead of Nottingham in second place, and they have a strong representation of Americans in their side which has helped them maintain this stranglehold on the title.

However, Nottingham started the game well, scoring two goals in the first minute of the game with Ben Robinson scoring the opener, and then extending the lead to 4-0. Durham fought their way back into the game, taking the score to 6-4, but it was UoN sports scholar and coach Kam Bumpus who was spurred the side on, winning all but one of the face offs and scoring a hat-trick of goals.

Nottingham’s other sports scholars, Tyler Wilcox and Nick Agrissani, also got themselves on the score sheet by scoring two goals apiece and taking Nottingham into an 8-7 lead at the end of the third quarter.

However, with minutes of the match left the experience of the Durham side powered through and they took the match 11-8. Although Nottingham were clearly devastated at the result, having led for the majority of the game, they could take some consolation in nearly causing the biggest upset of the year and producing an outstanding team performance that ran the eventual victors so close.

You can relive the excitement through the BUCS website, who have both picture galleries from the day’s events and a live feed of results that charts our teams’ progress to victory. You can also follow University of Nottingham Men’s Lacrosse on Twitter for more photos and news from the finals.
