Staff Oscars and Tri-Campus Postgraduate Awards

A busy short week with 2 awards events giving an opportunity to celebrate successes across the University. On Monday evening the Students’ Union held the annual Staff Oscars. This is always a highlight for the year. The staff who are nominated by students really appreciate it and the stories of each winner and runner-up are inspiring but wouldn’t be well known without this ceremony. Well done to Psychology for winning School of the Year and Maths being the runners-up in the same category. Schools in Science have done very well in all categories over the years and there was an excellent turnout from award winners and supporters.

On Thursday morning the Tri-Campus Postgraduate events were hosted by Professor Ed Wilding, Associate PVC for Research and Knowledge Exchange and Prof in Psychology. The Tri-Campus feature was scuppered by the overnight news of the first change in governing party in Malaysia since independence. The momentous changes in Malaysia precipitated a 2 day holiday so they will have a separate award event when they return to work. As with the Staff Oscars, this event reminded me of the good work that largely goes unnoticed across the University. 26 years ago I won one of these awards (Gertrude Cropper Award) during my PhD and it was a boost to my career at an early stage.

Thursday night saw the annual staff-student football game in Pharmacy. The winners claim the Stevens Cup (named after Emeritus Prof and keen footballer, Malcolm Stevens FRS, OBE). The staff team, “led” by Morgan Alexander lost 10-3 having taken an early and surprising lead. Special mention for Head of School Clive Roberts, who made at least 10 super saves to keep the score within sight of respectable. The rest of my schedule for last week was:
