Re-launch for the Faculty of Science Blog

After a break over the summer the blog returns to give a weekly update on activities within the Faculty and our interactions with the University Executive Board. For this academic year we are going to broaden the blog to include guest bloggers from across the Faculty leadership team.

Over the summer student recruitment into the Faculty has been strong and I’m grateful for the hard work during confirmation and clearing from many staff across Schools.

Last week started with a meeting with our Heads of Schools with the Knowledge Partnership. The Faculty has contracted KP to do a review of our course portfolio. Their report was well received and generally very positive about our portfolio. Katharine Reid (our new Associate PVC for Education and Student Experience) will lead a process in collaboration with Schools to consider the recommendations.

A lot of time was also spent discussing the implementation of the Research Information System. Over the summer we have been preparing to launch the Outputs module. I’ve generally been pleased with the module and roll out process. We are battling one annoying problem in that our HR system doesn’t keep records of staff middle names or initials and this is hampering the matching of papers to staff. A solution is on its way and I hope we will be fully up and running in the next couple of weeks.

Andy Long is now in post as Deputy Vice Chancellor and I meet one-to-one with him each month as well as a meeting with all the Faculty PVCs. I’d also like to thank Mike George who will continue to co-ordinate our international strategy. I met with Mike to agree that he will establish a new Faculty committee for International Strategy.
