5 Tips for Travelling by Plane

Reading the “5 Top Tips for Train Travel” blog by Amy I was inspired to write this post. While I am not an expert at air travel, I have done my fair share of long-haul flights to head back to my home country; Malaysia. Here are some of the ways I ensure I have the smoothest journey every time I fly:

1. Wear Comfortable Shoes

Maybe not quite like these ones..

While most of your journey involves you being seated, don’t forget the journey to, from and around the airport, some of it with heavy luggage (if you don’t check them in). Remember to wear comfortable shoes that are great for walking around (especially if you have a layover) and ones where you don’t have to take off your shoes mid-flight.

2. Arrive Early (at least 3 hours prior for international flights)

This may seem unnecessary but it is what most airlines will recommend. It is imperative that you arrive at the airport early to ensure you can get through baggage check-in and security as quickly as possible and with plenty of time to ensure you do not miss your flight! Additionally planning to get to the airport with hours to spare gives you a cushion just in case your bus or train to the airport is delayed.

3. Travel Light

Pack only what you need, unnecessary items you pack to take with you on your outbound flight will come back to haunt you on your return flight (which is almost always heavier with all the goodies and souvenirs). Plus, traveling light ensures you do not go over the baggage limit which can hurt your bank account quite a bit if you have to fork out the extra cash.

4. Separate, Separate, Separate!

Maybe it is to do with security, maybe it is a way of moving the queues along but remember to organise and separate all your items to ensure that you get through security without any issues. The two most important things to separate are a)Toiletries and b)Electronics. Putting these items in easy to reach places and in their designated packaging will ensure you get through security hassle free just like George Clooney’s character in Up in the Air.

5. Go Electronic

You can check in online, so why not have a mobile boarding pass? This saves you so much time searching through your bag for your paper boarding pass. If you are anything like me, the mobile boarding pass reduces the chances of the boarding pass going missing and not going to lie, it looks cool as well.

Hope this has helped, happy travels!
