BUCS Nationals 2016: Friday round-up

Friday 19 February saw 100s of UoN athletes travel to Sheffield to compete in the 2016 BUCS Nationals. After a chilly start to the day (around 1 degree) temperatures soon rose as our students started their journey’s towards BUCS gold!

Friday was slated to be the quietest day of the weekend with only indoor athletics, fencing, swimming and badminton taking place, but you would never know it! We saw some great performances from all of our athletes over the course of the day, so here is our handy round-up so you’re prepared for day two.

Badminton

Starting bright and early at 10.30am was our women’s singles and mixed doubles badminton players. The day stared off amazingly with Ellen Liddle smashing through her first two rounds- 21-11, 21-9 then 21-16, 21-13; but she was sadly knocked out in the third round of the women’s singles.
George Hargrieves and Emily Witts, James Zhao and Charlotte Ho made it through their first two rounds of the mixed doubles and are into the third round today.

Fencing – Men’s Epee

Along with Badminton, men’s Epee was the first to get underway at Graves Tennis Centre. We started the day off strong with all seven of our Epee players getting through to the poules, which is an incredible achievement over last year. Our key highlights include:
  • Herman Chan got to the last 32. He came in 25th after being knocked out by bronze medalist, Phil Marsh.
  • Ilya Bartenev and Guy Lawrence got to the last 64 then both got knocked out.
  • Excellent fencing from Guy, Ilya and Herman against some higher seeded opponents.

Athletics

Next it was over the English Institute of Sport for the men’s and ladies 60m sprint and 800m run. We got off to a great start with Olumide Ogunseita winning the first heat with an amazing time of 7.11seconds, but was knocked out of the semi-finals by 0.06 seconds.

While Katherine Clubb came in third for the first heat of the ladies 800m run, but was knocked out. The majority of the action will happen today when scholar Aubree Piepmiere takes on the 3000m run, she is expected to achieve BUCS gold!

Swimming

Starting at 6pm at Ponds Forge, swimming was the last event for the day. Taking part in only three races- 4×100 freestyle relay men’s, 800m freestyle and 4x100m freestyle women’s. The air was electric and James Bramley even gave the team some strong advice before they got started-

but sadly, we didn’t make it past the first heat.

Roll on day two!

Saturday sees the start of judo, karate, trampoline, climbing and the continuation of the athletics, badminton, swimming and men’s sabre and women’s foil! If you’re near Sheffield, get yourself down and support the #GreenandGold army!

Best of luck to all of our athletes from UoNSport!

You can follow all of the action from the BUCS Nationals on our Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and also right here as we’ll be updating each regularly throughout the weekend. There will also be regular updates on the BUCS official website and social media channels.
