The British Quidditch Cup 2015

Now that Helen Freeman has introduced you to quidditch at Nottingham, it’s time to get competitive and aim for the cup…

The British Quidditch Cup is a national quidditch tournament at which teams from all around the country face off against each other. BQC is the highlight of the quidditch calendar and this year the Nottingham Nightmares are hosting the tournament over at Wollaton Park!

Our fantastic quidditch manager placed the bid to host BQC, which involved an initial application followed by a tour of Wollaton Park grounds. Initially we were shortlisted with other potential hosts Loughborough and Norwich but in the end our bid was successful.

The way the tournament works is that all 24 teams play the whole first day against the other teams in their group. At the end of the day each team is seeded based on performance and the top 16 seeds qualify for knockout bracket play on the second day. Nottingham will be facing off against Bangor Broken Broomsticks, Durhamstrang, and Kent’s Flying Chaucers in group E. Nottingham vs Bangor is one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament due to a fierce history between the two teams, and as the main contenders vying for a place at the European Quidditch Cup, both teams will be determined to prove their worth.

The event is expected to be huge, drawing in flocks of spectators on top of the hundreds of players in attendance. Many people have already signed up to volunteer at the event and the good news is – you can too! You can apply to help at the event in a variety of ways by emailing gameplay@quidditchuk.org, QuidditchUK are particularly keen to have lots of photographers/videographers involved so now is the time to whip out your camera. Or if photography isn’t your thing, why not try stewarding? This is your chance to see quidditch in action AND add to your CV!

As far as potential victors go, a series of recent shake ups in other teams have blown the field wide open. It really is anyone’s for the taking! Come along and support the Nottingham Nightmares at the British Quidditch Cup 7th-8th March!
