BUCS Big Wednesday Trophy Preview 2019
Men’s Football
For the first time since 2004 the University of Nottingham Men’s Football 1s are into the BUCS Trophy final. That’s not all, a win in the final would secure the Men’s Football 1s a BUCS Gold medal in a cup for the first time since BUCS records began. This is not one to be missed. They face University of Bath in the BUCS Trophy final at 4.30pm at Basford United.
The Men’s Football 1s have been gradually getting stronger and stronger since their relegation from the Northern Premier Division in 2017 and after missing out on the Midlands 1A league by 2 points last year they came into this season in a real position of strength. However, Midlands’s 1A League title and promotion ambitions were quashed by a defeat away to eventual league winner’s University of Derby late in January. Whilst things may not have fallen their way in the league this year, they have been in formidable form in the cup, beating defending Trophy Champions Robert Gordon University 4-1, Edinburgh University 2-0 and then defeating Northern 1A league champions Newcastle University 2-1 in a dramatic cup semi-final victory to reach BUCS Big Wednesday. UoN will face a University of Bath 2s side that finished 3rdin the Western 1A league having been defeated three times already this season. UoN have scored 11 goals and only conceded 3 in the Trophy so far this year, UoN will go into this final confident that they can claim their first ever BUCS Trophy Gold medal in front of a home crowd on BUCS Big Wednesday.
Netball
The University of Nottingham Netball 1s will face Birmingham 2s in the final of the BUCS Trophy 2019 at 3.30pm at David Ross Sport’s Village. The Netball 1s have had an extremely successful season this year. Wining the BUCS Midland’s 1A League Title having only lost one game all season, they will now face Leeds University in a battle for promotion into the coveted BUCS Northern Premier. UoN Netball have already proven that they can perform on the big stage, featuring in the UoN Sport Headliner on 7th November 2018 against Nottingham Trent University and they did not disappoint, edging out NTU in a 39-38 victory in front of a sell-out David Ross Sports Village. On BUCS Big Wednesday, UoN will face Birmingham 2s in the BUCS Trophy Final. Birmingham Netball 2s finished 4thin the Midlands 1A league that UoN won by 3 points and the last time the two sides met UoN came out on top winning 47-26.
In last year’s BUCS Trophy UoN where narrowly defeated in the last 16 by a strong University of Leeds side, but with promotion this year firmly on the cards and having not lost a BUCS game since the 14th of November, UoN will be confident that they can continue their winning streak. They have proven they can do it on the big stage, at David Ross; with a big crowd watching, they will be eager to recreate that glory and claim a BUCS Trophy Gold in this year’s BUCS Big Wednesday!
Water Polo
Having defeated last year’s BUCS Trophy Finalists Manchester University in the first round and previously unbeaten Northern 1A League Champions Sheffield Hallam University in the semi-finals, the UoN Men’s Water Polo 1s are one of the most in form sides going into BUCS Big Wednesday. They won the Midlands 1A league essentially with ease, they played 10 games and won 10 games. They look on track to secure promotion to the BUCS Northern Premier when they play Loughborough University in a promotion play off on the 3rdApril. But for now, the focus is firmly on the BUCS Trophy final as they look to make it two BUCS Trophy Gold Medals in successive years. Last year they defeated Manchester University, this year they will face a University of Exeter side who won the Western 1A league having narrowly grabbed the title from the University of Bristol on goal difference. However, unlike UoN, University of Exeter have been defeated 3 times this year and UoN will be confident that they can continue their winning streak and win the Gold Medal on BUCS Big Wednesday!
Below is a layout of all the BUCS Trophy Finals that will be taking place on BUCS Big Wednesday, it’s an advantage and a privilege that it is being hosted by the University of Nottingham again this year so come down and show your colours! #GreenandGold
