Commonwealths – Days 5 & 6

There was little action for the University athletes on Monday. Only the University NBL (National Badminton League) player Chris Adcock was in action as he took on Malaysia, the number one seeds, as part of the mixed team final. He won his mixed doubles fixture to give England a 1-0 lead, but narrowly lost his men’s doubles match. Overall the team had to settle for silver as the match went with the form guide and saw Malaysia win 3-1.

On Tuesday, Men’s Hockey England lost 2-1 to New Zealand conceding 3 minutes from the end. The loss is likely to leave them second in the group setting up a tough semi final against the other group winners which is likely to be Australia. Hockey has only been in the commonwealth games since 1998 and Australia have won all 4 titles. Highlights of the match are available from the BBC website.

Emma Beddoes, a Nottingham graduate with a degree in French and German, kicked off her squash doubles campaign with partner Waters by beating the Scottish pair Clark & Gillen-Buchert 2-0. They take on New Zealand’s King and Landers-Murphy and then Papua New Guinea’s Morove and Boyce in their next pool matches today.

In the table tennis, Paul McCreery won both of his pool matches comfortably beating both Lesotho’s Mothibi and Belize’s Tun 4-0. Paul moves onto the mixed and men’s doubles events today before resuming his singles campaign on Thursday.

Also featuring today, Isobel Pooley competes in the women’s high jump qualifying round and will be hopeful of securing her place in the finals on Friday.
