BUCS Nationals 2016: Sunday round-up

That’s a wrap for us at the 2016 BUCS Nationals! Over 12,000 athletes entered into this year’s Nationals so Sunday’s finals were not just about winning but about celebrating the amazing achievements of all of our athletes.

As they now head back to Nottingham, with their medals, new personal bests and once in a life time’s experiences, we look back at all of the final day action.

Athletics

Let’s start where it all began shall we? The English Institute of Sport hosted the third and final day of the Indoor Athletics Championships, we were in a strong position at the start of the day with finalists in women’s high and triple jump as well as the men’s and women’s 3000m run.

Our eyes were all over scholar, Aubree Piepmeire who after finishing third in yesterday’s 3000m semi-finals was posed for success. After a tough battle she came in a well-respected 4th place. Fourth was also obtained by Emma Lowry in women’s high jump and 8th for Beth Mortiboy in the women’s triple jump.

It was just a day of finals, both Alisha Malcolm and Pierre Walker made it into the women’s and men’s 200m semi-finals. Overall, it was a weekend of solid performances from all of our UoN Athletics team!

Badminton

Not too far away, the Badminton quarter-finals were well underway. After just under an hour of dramatic game play our very own University of Nottingham Badminton player, Rohan Midha secured a silver medal in the men’s singles final. Meanwhile, we finished in an impressive 5th place in both the women and mixed doubles.

Trampolining

Across the road (literally) at Ice Sheffield, we saw victory in the BUCS 6 men’s with Cameron Morgan securing a silver medal! Our other finalists fared well, we saw Josh Whale finish in 6th and James McCoy in 13th in the BUCS 2 men’s final and Holly Hinks in 11th place in the BUCS 3 women’s.

Karate

It was a day of victories for our karate team over at Ponds Forge we started the day strong with our male kumite team securing bronze. This was nicely followed later in the day by Dan Nicholls winning a silver in the men’s senior kumite +84, Jacki Goody a bronze in men’s senior kumite -75. While our novice team also came away with BUCS medals, Ben Pepper, bronze in the men’s novice kumite +80 and Gemma Gill a silver in the women’s novice kumite +63.

Swimming

Also at Ponds Forge was the final day of the long course swimming championship. Fourth place was obtained by our Men’s Open 400m Medley Team, who were beaten to third by a mere 1.56seconds.

Massive well done to all of our UoN athletes! You can view all of the results from the weekend on the BUCS website as well as on Twitter to see all of the action from our students perspective.
