Basketball Captains look forward to Varsity

Ahead of Basketball’s Varsity game, we caught up with the captains of both the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams to find out how the teams and club are feeling.

Both teams have been training hard for their games, with Women’s Captain Tatiana Nsoungani expecting it to be a great game, saying that Trent are excellent competitors and playing against them brings out the best in the team.

With Varsity comes huge crowds, intense rivalries and high expectations, as Tatiana explains:

“Due to COVID, and some of our players being new, most of us haven’t experienced Varsity yet and are really looking forward to it after hearing what our teammates have said about it being like in the past. It’s also exciting knowing lots of people will be there to watch, a lot of the time it will get players more hyped hearing people cheer you on. “

The 2021 Nottingham Games saw the Women’s beat Trent with a score of 81 – 73. However the Men’s team played a tough game and conceded 53 – 72 to Trent.

This means that the Men’s team are coming back with even more determination and fire to win, as Captain Ben Holland explains:

“The Nottingham Games were a great way to get people excited about returning to sport after the pandemic and was thoroughly enjoyed by those who participated, despite the fact that we came out with the loss. However, the team for varsity is completely different and we are going in looking to rectify that loss from last year!”

Spirits are high within both teams and the wider Basketball club ahead of the Varsity games, and with huge crowds expected to attend, it is shaping up to be an exciting evening! Ben also told us that only one player on the Men’s team has actually played a Varsity game before and the rest of the team will be having their first experience of the series this year.

We would like to thank Tatiana and Ben for their time and wish them the best of luck in their games on Thursday 31st March!
