BUCS Big Wednesday 2022: #RoadToNottingham

All about BUCS Big Wednesday

BUCS Big Wednesday is one of the biggest events of the year for university sport, and it’s the only event where you can see over 100 teams, 16 sports and 50+ fixtures all on one day!

BUCS Big Wednesday is the team finals event where, across 57 fixtures, students compete in Championship and Trophy finals across 16 BUCS league sports. The event was hosted by University of Nottingham for two years in a row in 2018 and 2019, the first university to do so, and will be again this year. After two years away due to COVID-19, this one is going to be bigger and better than ever! Fixtures will take place across several venues in the city including the £40 million David Ross Sports Village on University Park campus.

Here at University of Nottingham we have some of the best student athletes in the UK, which is reflected in our BUCS dominance. We are currently* at the top of the BUCS points table with 3128 points, a massive 353 points ahead of Durham. Let’s hope it stays this way!

How have we done in the past?

2019 saw our best BUCS Big Wednesday yet, with University of Nottingham topping the medal table with a ground breaking 13 titles from 16 finals.

Director of Sport at the University Dan Tilley, commented:

“We were thrilled to have qualified for 16 finals on home soil and to go on to win in 13 of them has far exceeded our expectations and we are immensely proud of our students and staff for their achievements!”

In 2020 we had also had a number of finalists qualify to compete on BUCS Big Wednesday, but of course the event was cancelled due to COVID-19.

This year, we are hoping to enter an equally impressive number of teams into the event! We have significantly more teams competing in for Championship wins as opposed to Trophy wins, so keep an eye out for teams like Women’s and Men’s Hockey.

What you can look forward to…

Thousands of students have been training and competing all year so far leading up to BUCS Big Wednesday, with only the best in each sport making it through numerous knockout stages and reaching the finals. It will certainly be a day not to be missed!

There will be 16 sports that will be competing at BUCS Big Wednesday:

American Football Badminton Basketball Fencing
Football Hockey Lacrosse Netball
Rugby League Rugby Union Squash Table Tennis
Tennis Volleyball Water Polo Wheelchair Basketball
