The Headliner: UoN Men’s Football – Match Preview

The Headliner event series supported by Red Bull finally returns to the University of Nottingham campus this coming Wednesday! Focusing on our University of Nottingham Men’s Football 1st Team’s BUCS Trophy match against the University of Birmingham, the event is set up to be a fantastic display of university sport. With Red Bull in attendance on the day to provide the entertainment off the pitch, this Headliner can’t come soon enough.

As the pandemic halted university sport in 2019, the team’s BUCS Trophy win in 2018 means that they are still the current holders of the trophy. At that years Big BUCS Wednesday, the #GreenandGold took on Bath University in the final, going on to make history by winning 3-0 and in the process becoming the first BUCS Trophy winners in Men’s Football for the University of Nottingham.

Looking to repeat that feat this year, the club know that it will be a tough challenge but are more than confident that they can achieve the same outcome with coach Tom Hayes saying, “this year we are looking to win the league and cup double. As long as we stay healthy as a group, retain focus and do not get complacent there is no reason why we won’t achieve this.”

Facing a Birmingham team that are in the same league as them in the first round means that it won’t be the first time the two have clashed this year. Having played the first league fixture between the two on the 20th October in a highly competitive contest at David Ross Sports Village, means that both are familiar with each other and know what to expect come kick-off for the Headliner. The University of Nottingham came out on top in the first clash between the two, with a 3-1 win and will be looking for more of the same this time around.

The event will not only be a highly competitive fixture showcasing elite university football, but an entertaining spectacle to raise money for a good cause as this Headliner event will also act as a Movember fundraiser. Collections will be made on the day to add to the money already raised through donations at the point of ticket registration. The men’s football club have been at the forefront of the incredible work our sports clubs do for charity and in the community, highlighted recently by their efforts in helping to feed schoolchildren during half-term. This built upon their similar work last year which was deservedly recognised at the 2021 BUCS Awards with the club winning the Club Charity Initiative award.

Since that award the club have continued their brilliant work, and the Headliner with Red Bull will be another fantastic event that highlights their commitment to excellence both on and off the pitch. Even though the event is now sold out, you will still be able to follow the action through our social media (@uonsport), as well as through a live stream on our YouTube channel! If you already have your ticket secured, why not make sure you keep warm whilst supporting the #GreenandGold on Wednesday with one of our bobble hats?!
