UoN Sailing host The Nottingham Snakebite 2020
On Saturday 8th February 2020, 24 sailing teams from across the nation descended on Notts County Sailing Club for a weekend of competing in the annual Nottingham Snakebite.
Due to the nature of running the event, University of Nottingham Sailing Club did not get to compete in the Snakebite themselves, but they still put in a full club effort to ensure the event went as smooth as possible. The organisation of Snakebite began in June 2019 – the club needed to ensure dates were set, payments were received, boats could be borrowed, catering was sorted, and scheduling was ready to go.
Unfortunately, due to Storm Ciara the teams were only able to race on the Saturday, rather than the traditional two days. Knowing that Sunday would be not be suitable to sail in, the club made sure to get as much racing in as possible on the Saturday. Races began at 9:27am and finished shortly after 3:00pm, managing to fit an astonishing 96 races in that time.
Congratulations to sailing team, Exeter Black for placing 1st in the Snakebite.
Without the record number of volunteers from the University of Nottingham Sailing Club, the event would not have been as successful. Izzy Lewis, 3rd year Medicine Student and Vice President of UoN Sailing, was responsible for much of the organising of the event. She was aided especially by: Roshan Bhumbra, club Bosun; Alex Clay and Imogen Marley, club social secretaries; Angus Elliman, sailing secretary; and Peter Bradley, captain.
Hannah Thomspon, club president, commented on the success of the event: “Snakebite is a fantastic experience for everyone involved and I could not be more pleased with how well the club worked together to run the event. Despite the high winds and lack of sleep, we still managed to run an amazing event – definitely a highlight on the sailing calendar!”
Next for UoN Sailing Club, they will be heading to Bristol where the first team will be competing in BUCS playoffs. Over the first weekend of March, a mixed team of beginners and team members will be competing at the Big Lash in Liverpool. The club’s final outing before the Easter break will be a one-day event of fun races in Birmingham, open to everyone in the club regardless of experience.
