The Headliner | Scholar in Focus – Elliot Harvey

Since their founding year in 1995, Nottingham American Football have seen their sport grow in the UK. The past few years in particular have seen huge successes for the #GreenandGold American Football team. From being promoted to the Premier North league to being voted most likely to win the National title a few years back, the team is set to have a smashing year.

On Sunday 3rd November the University of Nottingham American Football 1st Team will kick-off their BUCS season in style as the first Headliner of the year!

Nottingham will be playing against the University of Stirling aka Clansmen. The last time these teams went head to head at a home game Nottingham came out victorious, scoring 27-7. But can our #GreenandGold players do it again?

Our Player in Focus is Elliot Harvey, previous player for Lincolnshire Bombers. After recently playing as for GB Lions U19s team in Holland and playing his first international game in front of a home crowd earlier this year, the running back is set to play well in the upcoming Headliner event. Sponsored by Trident Athlete, Harvey is set to be an excellent asset to the team – both in the Headliner event and the season.

FUN FACT –The Lincolnshire Bombers were only formed in 2005 and he is their first player to score a touchdown for Great Britain.

How did it feel representing Great Britain in Holland 2018?

“Making my debut for GB away in Holland was an incredible experience, made even better by being giving the starting role as running back. It was my first time playing American Football outside of the UK. It was incredibly nerve-racking but I attacked the game with everything I had and left it all out on the field.”

What drew you to American Football in the first place?

“My dad and I have always been huge fans of the NFL and we’ve always watched the games regularly on a Sunday. When I was 14 years old I found out that there was a team in my local town, I went to one of their rookie sessions and I’ve been playing ever since.

Prior to playing American football I had played a variety of different sports but never managed to settle on one. Playing American football has been the best decision I’ve made and I’m sure I’ll be active in the sport for many years to come.”

What are your thoughts on the upcoming season?

“I’m incredibly excited for the season to come, I followed the team closely last year and saw they had a great year going unbeaten in the regular season. We’re definitely looking to build on the success from last year and the aim will be to go all the way and bring the National title back to Nottingham. We have a great group of players and a great coaching staff, there’s no reason why we can’t be National Champions.”

The upcoming Headliner event against Stirling will be the first time you compete for Nottingham. How are you feeling about your first BUCS game?

“The Headliner event will be a great opportunity to showcase what we have been working on week-in week-out during training. Playing up to the big stage is always something I’ve been able to do as a player and I can’t think of a better way to kick off my first BUCS season then with an opener that is getting so much coverage. I’m looking forward to the game and I can’t wait to kick-off the season with a great team.”
