How UoN Sport can help you settle into University of Nottingham

It has only been a week since students received their A-level results and confirmed their place at University of Nottingham, yet many will be counting down the days until they arrive and start the exciting journey ahead.

We understand that now is a waiting game and many students will be feeling a mixture of excitement and nerves about moving away from home for the first time and meeting new people.

If you’ve already packed your bags because you can wait,  or you are a ‘last-minute-Larry’ we thought we could provide you with some handy hints and tips about the depth of the sports offering at UoN and how it can help you settle into your new home at University of Nottingham.

If you don’t believe us, you can just ask the 20,000 students who took part in some form of sport, fitness and recreation with us last year!

  1. Participating in physical activity is a great way to meet new people.

With over 70 sports clubs all hosting trials and taster session there really is something for everyone. It’s a great way to make friends, break the ice, set some sporting goals for the year and ultimate become a member of team Green and Gold!

You can meet people who might live in the flat next door to you by participating in our Welcome Halls Sports Day. However simply attending one of our fitness classes can lead to conversations with new faces and above all get you healthy, active and ready to tackle the challenges of university life.

  1. You can feel less guilty about living off Pot Noddles…

For many students, hitting to the gym has previously consisted of jumping on a treadmill, sticking the headphones in and running for an hour. We are here to open you up to a new world of health and fitness and provide you with access to over 200 fitness classes per week!

During Welcome, we are putting on four free Les Mills taster sessions which can help you burn up to 540 calories and showcase a number of new ways to push yourself and stay fit and healthy! The taster sessions consist of BODYPUMP, BODYCOMBAT and BODYJAM so we are sure you’ll find a class which suits you.

  1. You can open the door to new opportunities and boost your CV at the same time!

Our Leadership Academy offers an invaluable opportunity to build your leadership skills through sport. We focus on key issues such a behaviour change and driving attainment amongst young people through physical activity. You can find out more about this opportunity at our Leadership Academy Welcome Evening.

  1. Participate in a bit of flat bonding by challenging yourselves to reach the top of the climbing wall

If our Welcome Halls Sports Day didn’t get you’re competitive juices flowing then how about challenging your new friends on our climbing wall at David Ross Sports Village. Our climbing instructors will show you the basics with free tasters on the David Ross Sports Village walls thought-out Welcome. This is open to all students, so grab your friends and see if you can conquer the wall!

  1. Meet people facing similar challenges as you

Our Engage Inclusive Sports Day welcomes students with a disability and/or long-term health condition. This is a relaxed environment and it’s easy to join in with the dedicated Disability Sports Offer. Here you can find out about the inclusive sports programme we host at the University of Nottingham which includes activities such as inclusive climbing!

  1. Join us at Welcome Fair

If you want to get involved come visit us at welcome fair where we can help guide you on your sports and fitness journey at UoN. All the clubs will be there on hand to talk you through their offering and how you can get involved and #findyouractive.

Living a healthy and active lifestyle whilst you’re at University will help decrease stress and increase your overall health. The connection between physical and mental health is well documented, and we hope that by encouraging an inclusive atmosphere in our sports clubs more people will feel able to join us, make friends and keep active during their time in Nottingham.

We are very excited about welcoming new students to the University of Nottingham Sport and we look forward to seeing in September.
