University of Nottingham Sport – Volunteer of the Month (March)

University of Nottingham Sport’s Leadership Academy offers students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and make a real contribution to their local community.

With more than 120 students now part of the Academy, the programme continues to grow with the addition of exciting new opportunities planned for the summer term. Our Volunteer of the Month award provides a great opportunity to show case the great work happening thanks to our students.

Each month we’re showcasing one volunteer who has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to making a difference in their local community, both on and off-campus.

March Volunteer of the Month – Olivia McDonnell

After our successful launch of volunteer of the month in January, we are delighted to announce the March Volunteer of the Month accolade has been awarded to Olivia McDonnell.

Livvy joined the University of Nottingham Sports Magic Bus Programme at the start of the 2017/18 academic year. Magic Bus is a voluntary programme that works in disadvantaged schools across Nottingham to help children learn valuable life skills through the medium of sport.

A 3rd year psychology student, Livvy was looking for something new to get involved in during her final year at the University of Nottingham. So when she spotted a fellow student wearing Leadership Academy stash, she decided to go online and find out more about the programme. Since then she hasn’t missed a single school session on the Magic Bus programme.

Jack Kavanagh, University of Nottingham Sport’s Volunteer Officer commented:

“Livvy has come on leaps and bounds since joining our Magic Bus volunteer programme. It’s not just about the amount of hours that someone volunteers or the amount of opportunities they sign up to, but the personal journey undertaken.”

“Livvy has committed to the programme 100% and her confidence has grown tenfold, both when leading the young people, but also when interacting with her peers. I’m really pleased to see Livvy recognised as our Volunteer of the Month and look forward to seeing her develop further as a leader during the rest of the academic year.”

Livvy added;

“I’ve found it really rewarding to be involved in University of Nottingham Sport’s Leadership Academy and the concept of Magic Bus is brilliant. I’ve met a whole new team of new people, and by putting myself out there and trying something different I feel I’ve gained so much more confidence. To be honest – it’s also just loads of fun running the sessions!”

As a thank you Livvy will receive a gift voucher from our partners at the Clubhouse Café in David Ross Sports Village. From everyone at University of Nottingham Sport – well done and thank you Livvy!
