5 fellowships for new Double Doctoral Degree (DDD) Program in Asian and Transcultural Studies, Heidelberg and Venice, due: 15 March, 2018

The Faculty of Philosophy at Heidelberg University and the Department of Asian and North African Studies at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice have established a Double Doctoral Degree Program in Asian and Transcultural Studies for up to five excellent doctoral candidates.

Candidates will be co-supervised by one professor at Heidelberg University and Ca’ Foscari University, respectively. Upon successful completion of their doctoral studies, they will receive a doctoral degree diploma from both universities that refers to the double degree program and the partner university.

Aims and Structure

The three-year Double Doctoral Degree Program in Asian and Transcultural Studies focuses on Eurasia and/or the Mediterranean. The program employs a transcultural approach to study these regions in a way that transcends notions of historically fixed geographical, ethnic or linguistic borders. By instead focusing on processes of cultural exchange, it challenges the limitations imposed by such boundaries and the institutions that reproduce them.

Candidates have access to a large and vibrant international academic community being trained at two of Europe’s top universities. They spend a minimum of one year at each university. Generally, the second year will be spent doing fieldwork or at the partner university. In addition, they participate in regular joint graduate student workshops.

The program combines the European model of individualized doctoral studies with structured guidance by both institutions. Students will be assigned one advisor from each university.

Fellowships

Candidates will be supported by a three-year fellowship that starts in October of each year. The monthly stipend amounts to 1200,- EUR over a period of 36 months. In addition, candidates receive a research allowance of 3000,- EUR to cover individual field and/or archival research.

Application Requirements

Candidates applying through Heidelberg University must hold an M.A. or equivalent in a discipline of the humanities or social sciences with an above-average grade (at least 1.7, B+, 2+, “magna cum laude”, or equivalent). The degree has to reflect at least four years of study at university level. Applicants who plan to graduate in the current academic year must provide a university transcript that clearly indicates the progress to degree.

Applicants must prove advanced language skills in English by providing a certificate confirming at least level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, e.g. a score of 100 in the Internet based TOEFL or a score of 7.0 in the IELTS. Other methods of proof may also be acceptable.

Applicants must indicate one supervisor from Heidelberg University and Ca’ Foscari University, respectively. The supervisor at Heidelberg University must be a full member of the Faculty of Philosophy.
