ANN Member Publication: Laia Manonelles Moner “The Constructions of Chinese Contemporary Art Histor(ies)”, monograph, Spanish (Barcelona: Edicions Bellaterra)

ReNetMoCoCA member Laia Manonelles Moner (University of Barcelona, Spain) has recently published the monograph “La construcción de la(s) historia(s) del arte contemporáneo en China: Conversaciones con comisarios, historiadores y críticos” (The Constructions of Chinese Contemporary Art Histor(ies) : Conversations with Curators, Historians and Art Critics).

The author engages with epistemological and agent-centered questions that have marked the art historical and ethnographic discussion of scholars across the world since the advent of contemporary Chinese art: How is the history of contemporary Chinese art constructed? From what perspectives? Who are the people behind the theoretical and exhibition discourses in monographs, essays, catalogues and interviews? What are the expectations generated and how do these influence its international reception? The monograph answers these questions based on extensive fieldwork contextualizing the emergence of contemporary Chinese art in the global arena during the 1990s and also addresses the rapid consolidation of many Chinese artists in the transnational art market at the beginning of the 21st century.

The book brings together a series of interviews with historians, art critics and curators who have actively participated in the writing of the histor(ies) of contemporary art in China. It thus presents a polyphony of voices and viewpoints. The narratives presented here are personal points of view, conscious of the challenges to articulate a history that is still in the process of being constructed. These observations become instruments for interpretation, dialogue and reflection about the paradigms and narratives of Chinese contemporary art.

 La construcción de la(s) historia(s) del arte contemporáneo en China: Conversaciones con comisarios, historiadores y críticos

 ¿Cómo se construye la historia del arte contemporáneo chino? ¿Desde qué perspectivas? ¿Quiénes son los que esbozan los discursos teóricos y expositivos a partir de monográficos, ensayos, catálogos y libros de entrevistas? ¿Cuáles son las expectativas que genera y de qué modo éstas influyen en su recepción en un marco internacional?  Tales preguntas deben enmarcarse en la emergencia del arte chino contemporáneo en el escenario global en la década de los noventa y en la rápida consolidación de gran parte de sus artistas, a partir del nuevo milenio, en el mercado artístico transnacional.

El presente libro recoge una serie de entrevistas a distintos historiadores, críticos de arte y comisarios que han participado activamente en la elaboración de la(s) historia(s) del arte contemporáneo en China desde una polifonía de voces y prismas. Aquí hay que tener presente la importancia de los relatos presentados desde la primera persona del singular, siendo conscientes del reto de articular una historia mientras está siendo construida. Estas conversaciones se convierten en instrumentos para reinterpretar, dialogar y reflexionar sobre los paradigmas y narrativas que acompañan al “denominado” arte contemporáneo chino.
