Five Years in 365 Days: A Guide to NUBS Postgraduate Careers

What if you could catapult five years into your career in just 365 days?

I bet, just like me, you are excited about such a possibility.

Well, what if I told you that such a springboard exists at Nottingham University Business School through the Postgraduate Careers Team?

Let me break it down for you.

Every postgraduate student at the Nottingham University Business School has “free” access to specialised careers support.

When I say “free” I mean at no additional cost – you’ve already paid for it.

Which is to say you might as well take full advantage of it.

I’m here to tell you how!

  1. Accelerated Career Leader Programme

With training sessions ranging from Career Planning, to LinkedIn and Networking, and all the way to Psychometric Tests and Interview Skills, the ACLP is a module you do not want to miss out on.

Aside from the learning, it is also an opportunity to meet like-minded individuals from across the MSc community.

Through the weekly sessions, I have met some of my closest friends and recently became the self-proclaimed ‘Queen of Kahoot Quizzes’.

As you can tell, it’s great fun!

  1. Careers Consultations

Featuring my favourite service, we have access to one-on-one coaching from experienced careers consultants.

With the chance to discuss anything from future career pathways, all the way to making applications, you can book in for mock interview sessions, practice recruitment tests, as well as assessment centres.

I have been scheduling regular consultations since before I even arrived at the university (and they’re not sick of me… yet).

  1. Careers Fairs, Employer Events and Webinars

Through the Careers Fairs, Employer Events and Webinars, we get exclusive insights from employers, professionals, and alumni from every possible industry.

From consulting, to finance, to engineering, to technology, there is an event for you.

All you have to do is sign up and show up!

We’re only halfway through the list and you can already see for yourself how much the Postgraduate Careers Team and the University has to offer.

  1. Placement and Work Experience Opportunities

Your MSc year at the University of Nottingham is an opportune time to make both academic progress and professional leaps.

This is through the following schemes:

Nottingham Postgraduate Advantage Award – helps you showcase your extra-curricular activities

Researcher Academy – enables you to develop your research skills through placements and internships

Unitemps – the one-stop shop for temporary job vacancies, student jobs and internships nationwide

Ingenuity Lab Internships – the opportunity to support innovative early-stage enterprises

  1. Job Search Platforms

Whether you’re looking for a full-time job or a graduate scheme, whether you want to work internationally or in the UK, there is a platform for you.

Specifically for international students like me, we have access to Student Circus – a database for sponsored UK Graduate jobs, and Passport Career – a site for job opportunities in cities across the world.

What’s more is that if you are more interested in pursuing further education after your MSc, you have a free gateway to The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding.

This resource is for anyone looking to fund PhD, Masters, and PGCE study in the UK through grants from charities, trusts, and foundations,

  1. Expansive Alumni Network

The most effective career advice I have ever received is to speak to people currently in the positions I aspire towards.

Getting in touch with NUBS alumni is an opening for the formation of a global network of brilliant minds.

As an added bonus, the Postgraduate Careers Team can help you connect with these experienced professionals.

So, there you have it – a comprehensive guide to catapulting five years into your career in just 365 days!

With all of these resources, you get out of the careers support as much as you put into it.

Your MSc year is what you make it, so be sure to make the most of it!
