UNMC IBC and Department of Biosafety, NRE Jointly Organize Two-day Biosafety Training Workshop

UNMC Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) jointly organized a 2-day Biosafety Training Workshop with Department of Biosafety, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) on 3^rd and 4^th June 2014 at UNMC.

The main objective of the workshop was to create awareness among the researchers and laboratory personnel on the Biosafety Act 2007, Biosafety (Approval and Notification) Regulations 2010, IBC guidelines and general biosafety modules such as containment facilities and work practices, risk assessment and management of genetically modified organisms (or GMOs in short).

The invited speakers were Dr Anita Anthonysamy and Mr Muhammad Farhan Roslan from NRE, Dr Norliza Abu Bakar from Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) and Dr Rahizan Issa from Institute for Medical Research (IMR). The sessions were moderated by Prof Andrew Morris, Dr Sandy Loh and Dr Kan Mun Seng.

There were 32 participants in total including IBC members, safety officers, principle investigators (project leaders) and postgraduates from Faculties of Science and Engineering who have gained benefits at large from the workshop.

“This training workshop is the first of its kind for our UNMC members. I believe it has provided us comprehensive guidance and updates to ensure biosafety compliance and could help promote good research in UNMC. Perhaps, we would have an opportunity to collaborate with Department of Biosafety again to make it an annual event for UNMC.” said the organizing chair, Dr Sandy Loh during the closing speech of the event. Besides, Dr Sandy Loh has expressed gratitude to the organizing committee who has made this event a great success.
